LAND CONVERSION & AGRIBUSINESS

In several countries, particularly in the tropics, forest land is increasingly being converted for agriculture; most controversially soy and palm oil plantations. In many cases this conversion is legal and contributes to macro economic development in the country in question. However it remains environmentally destructive and, according to NGOs, plantations have been illegally and forcibly established on land traditionally owned by indigenous peoples and development has often been associated with violent conflict.

Ninety per cent of the world's palm-oil exports come from the oil-palm plantations of Malaysia and Indonesia. Most of these plantations are on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The very lowland forest that the oil-palm industry favours for conversion is the only remaining habitat of critically endangered species such as the orang-utan.

As a result of the civil society concern, companies that use palm oil, such as supermarkets and food manufacturers, are beginning to ensure that the products they buy are legal and not from the most damaging conversions by working with initiatives such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. However, verifying the legality of palm oil supply chains faces many of the same problems that have been found in the timber trade.

One particularly significant area of concern for the future is the increasing demand for bio-diesel, which can be made from palm oil. Although use of this fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport, if it is produced in a way that encourages deforestation it may not be the environmental salve that has been hoped.

projectPOTICO Project POTICO (Palm Oil, Timber, Carbon Offsets) is a revolutionary new approach to ecosystem management in Indonesia that is designed to improve sustainability in a region known for its high deforestation rate.

POTICO's goal is to prevent deforestation by diverting planned oil palm plantations away from forests and on to already degraded areas. This strategy would ensure that oil palm can expand to meet demand, generating local revenues and jobs, while halting the destruction of forests. POTICO aims to demonstrate that it is economically viable for this alternative approach to establishing new plantations by developing a combination of different revenue streams. This model will circumvent the perverse economic incentive to clear virgin forests when establishing oil palm plantations.
