PNG awarded dubious Golden Chainsaw

Environmental lobby group Greenpeace has given the Papua New Guinea government its Golden Chainsaw award for failing to protect the country's rainforests.

Greenpeace handed the dubious honour to a PNG representative on the sidelines of the Convention of Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan.

It also released a report arguing PNG should not be given money to save its forests under the United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation plan.

Greenpeace PNG spokesman Sam Moko says the government has no plans to stop rampant logging at home.

"The government is turning a blind eye to the ongoing illegal logging, corruption and abuse of Indigenous peoples," he said.

Previous recipients of the Golden Chainsaw include Malaysian and Brazilian logging companies.
